Paroxysmal supraventricular tachycardia (PSVT) is a condition characterized by episodes of rapid heart rate. It can often terminate spontaneously or through vagal stimulation techniques like the Valsalva manoeuvre, ice-cold water immersion, or carotid sinus massage. Symptoms include; rapid heart rate, palpitations, chest discomfort and shortness of breath.

Treatment

Vagal stimulation techniques (Valsalva manoeuvre, ice-cold water immersion, carotid sinus massage)

Intravenous adenosine

Verapamil hydrochloride (caution in patients recently treated with beta-blockers)

Catheter ablation (for recurrent episodes)

IntravenousDirect current cardioversion (for hemodynamically unstable patients or when other measures fail)

Medication for prevention (diltiazem hydrochloride, verapamil hydrochloride, beta-blockers, flecainide acetate, propafenone hydrochloride)
