Paracetamol

Side effects:  Side effects are rare but serious effects: include rash, itching/swelling (especially of the face/tongue/throat), severe dizziness, trouble breathing.

Overdose symptoms: Nausea, vomiting, loss of appetite, sweating, stomach/abdominal pain, extreme tiredness, yellowing eyes/skin, dark urine.

Interactions:   Azoles

Pregnancy and breastfeeding: Safe to use


PARACETAMOL DOSING- Note dosing  every 4-6 hours; maximum 4 doses per day 

3-5 months – 60mg every

6-23 months- 120mg  

2-3 years- 180mg 

4-5 years- 240mg 

6-7 years- 240-250mg 

8-9 years 360-375mg

10-11 years 480-750mg 

12-15 year-480-500mg 

16-17 years 500mg-1g

Dosing based on weight (varies from different guidelines)

Weight less than 40kg: 500mg 4 times daily (max dose 2g daily)

Weight 41-49kg: 500-1000mg 3 times daily (max 3g daily)

Weight over 50kg: 500-1000mg 4 times daily (max 4g daily)

Licensing: 120mg/5ml (2 months and over), 250mg/5ml (6 years and older), 500mg tablets (10 years and above)

Ibuprofen

Side effects: Headaches, feeling dizzy, sick (nausea), being sick (vomiting), indigestion

Interactions: Ibuprofen may slow the elimination of lithium or methotrexate. Aspirin due to the increased risk of bleeding

Pregnancy and breastfeeding: Avoid in the last three months of pregnancy. Safe in breastfeeding 



Ibuprofen dosing

3-5 months- 50mg TDS 

6-11 months- 50mg TDS-QDS 

1-3 years- 100mg TDS 

4-6 years- 150mg TDS 

7-9 years- 200mg TDS 

10-11 years 300mg TDS 

12-17 years 300-400mg TDS-QDS 


Aspirin

Dose: 1-2 tablets (300-600mg) every 3-4 hours as required, to a maximum of 12 tablets (3.6g) daily in divided doses.

Side effects: Gastrointestinal bleeding, abdominal pain, nausea or vomiting, black tarry stools 

Interactions: NSAIDS, warfarin 

Pregnancy and breastfeeding: Avoid taking Aspirin tablets during pregnancy, especially in the last 3 months of pregnancy or whilst breast-feeding.

Licensing: To be used in over 16s due to risk of Reyes Syndrome
