Pain can be categorised into acute and chronic pain. Acute pain can be caused by a specific disease or injury and may also serve a biologic purpose, it is usually for a short while and can be self limiting. Chronic pain may be considered a disease state. It is pain that is longer than the normal time of healing, if it is caused by a disease or injury.

  • Patients who are abusing analgesics (routine appointment)
  • Young children who do not appear to have responded to doses of pain relief even after receiving maximum dose for their age (maximum for their age group)
  • Patients suffering pain more severe than experienced before and is increasing in severity over several days with no apparent reason
